What I saw when I took this photo is the familiar far-away gaze many NY commuters are sometimes lucky to have. For a few moments, we can forget the day or replay moments. This wasn't a moment of being in a rush to get anywhere. The bright colors of the woman's hair and shirt repeat elements in her reflection.

One beautiful morning in August, I was running in a park in Lviv and then I noticed a place where a ray of sunlight was falling very beautifully. I quickly ran home to get my camera, when I returned - I saw a woman doing yoga in this place and I was lucky - it made my day and I got a good photo!

On a piercingly cold day, an urge prompted me to bring my camera on a dog walk along the Hudson. At the 72nd Street Boat Basin, a lone, elegant figure was feeding the birds amidst the winter gusts. After securing the dogs, I approached, startling the flock into a skyward dance. Capturing this moment led to an unexpected friendship with Teresa, Riverside Park's unsung nurturer, whose daily ritual of care for wildlife is as steadfast as the river itself.

The lone business man, juxtaposed in front of the jungle mural. To me, this represented the concrete jungle as well. You can feel his confidence and drive, as he strides across the stark concrete lot.

Sitting at an outdoor cafe in New York on a brisk morning, I glanced into the cafe window next to me and saw this lovely woman gazing at her own reflection in a hand mirror.  I was mesmerized watching her and knew I had to capture the moment.

The fragrant harbor is what Hong Kong is called. That’s why one step on my photographic journey through this quirky, memorable and impressive city brought me on the ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. Small boats, full of people, a sea of ​​foreign words, a language that was so unknown to me and whose beautiful unexpected sound had an intoxicating effect on me. I took a seat at the end of the ferry, next to a father and the two girls, probably two sisters. A tender, familiar, silent unity bound this small group together. The strange voices rushed through the room, a rhythm I didn’t know. And then, suddenly, a familiar sound of setting sun, which flooded the whole boat, sunset. Glowing, warm, soft and so breathtaking that it became silent in this almost sacred space. At this moment I took the photo of the two girls. Part of me still sits there listening to the whispers of a beautiful foreign language...in the radiance of this unearthly light and always returns to this place in thought… just one moment...but miles away.

I took this photo during a photographic residency organized by the Alliance Française de Diego Suarez in the north of Madagascar in Octobre 2023.  “Galerie à Ciel Ouvert” our traveling photography project was selected to take part in this residency. I was in the La Dordogne district, renowned for its dhow (wooden boat) making. I like the atmosphere of the area, very calm with the sound of the sea. As I walked around the neighborhood, I noticed the children playing and the dog relaxing. I like this image because it exudes a certain serenity, the joy of living and innocence.

In March 2023, this photograph was clicked in Hampi, India. Hampi is dotted with age-old rock formations and monoliths. Visitors are wonderstruck upon viewing remnants of the past. The immovable boulders symbolize strength and endurance. In a place where visitors are mesmerized by bygones, the woman in the photograph who broke branches with her bare hands personifies the boulders in the present day. The bundled sticks can represent her grievances alongside her dreams. Most importantly, the bundle of sticks merging with the tree underscores how certain women may be disempowered on a socio-economic level, but their spirit cannot be contained.

All my life I have had an obsession with color, so when I saw those colors and the flash of light that made the room paint those tones, my gaze stopped, feeling that emotion that you feel when you think you are in the right place to shoot.

I love the city of NY. It’s so emblematic and has such a special ENERGY – the Beat of NYC is unbeatable. Thanks to extremely professional street performers, we can enjoy top-class shows without having to wait or pay for a ticket. They work hard under any weather conditions on rough surfaces and burning asphalt. As a street photographer, I can relate very much to them. That is why this project is a TRIBUTE to all of street artists, regardless of the type of art, gender, age, nationality, or race. What matters is their talent and hard work!

On a hot summer day in New York, I rode a crowded subway in a car that had no air conditioning and empty seats. As we approached Coney Island, only a few people remained, including this woman. With the amusement park in the background, she opened the fan as if on cue. I crouched next to her and shot a few frames. When I saw that the afternoon light radiated on her face and the rides and her fan lined up perfectly with the windows and the back of the her hand, I knew I had a special image.

This image was made at Coney Island in New York City on New Year’s Day 2025 at the annual Polar Bear Plunge. When I saw the angel contemplating the vast sea as bathers were coming back to shore from the icy cold water, the scene felt otherworldly. As I was shooting, suddenly a gust of wind lifted their hair and the feathers perhaps in preparation for a flight to the cosmos or a spiritual awakening.

I arrived in Times Square in NYC one afternoon for a day of photographing around town when I spotted this woman in her stylish, but unusual, jumpsuit standing directly in front of the NYC subway. A happy coincidence to see the matching patterns. And to be framed by two yellow taxis was the icing on the cake. I knew I was off to a good start.

I visited Coney Island, NY on a warm day in the off season. There weren't many people around and not much action. On the boardwalk I spotted this man sitting in front of this iconic billboard. Quite oblivious to me, and to the fish, I took his photo and walked on. What the fish did next, I do not know.

This photo was taken in the heart of NYC--West 42nd Street. It's an area I spend a fair amount of time in. The beautiful afternoon light and the crazy hustle and bustle of the street make for great street photography opportunities. Generally, I am barely noticed, as was the case here.

I was so taken that afternoon with the beautiful light when I spotted this lone woman eating at the diner window. I took my chances hoping she would not see me. Clearly deep in her thoughts, she did not. I took the one shot and moved quickly on. Only later when I was looking at the day's work did I notice the wonderful shadow of the man walking by at the moment I shot the photo. One of those fortuitous surprises that photography occasionally bestows.

I am very fond of this photo for several reasons--most especially because it has been described to me as very ""Edward Hopperesque."" I am humbled by the thought.

This photograph was taken at the Easter Parade in New York City. It is an annual event that draws people from all over the region to Fifth Avenue, in the heart of the city. The gathering is an unstructured event, not a traditional parade as such. Throngs of people come dressed in their Sunday finest but also in the most outlandish outfits imaginable. It is a wild and exciting display of men, women, children and even their pets!

A street photographer’s haven, the day is a constant and intense sensory overload. Fascinating and captivating subjects abound and the shooting is non-stop. Which probably accounts for the fact that I have no concrete memory of taking this photo! It was only later, back at the studio, that I found this image among the many I had taken.

And what a pleasure it was to see this colorful, festive trio.

In early 2020, I was traveling in India for the first time. It was a trip I had been wanting to take for a long time. For the weeks I was there I was completely dazzled by the color, the people, the scenery. And while it was so captivating, there was much that was difficult to see as well. This photo was taken as we were driving down a highway. The family depicted live right along the roadway. Instantly, my eye went to the young girl. Such beauty in such difficult circumstances.

I was out shooting one day when I came upon a man inside a darkened truck. A cloud floated by obscuring the man's face. I made a photo. Ah, the mysteries of street photography.

I was in Los Angeles, CA and decided to visit the Fashion District. While walking around, I noticed a great number of fabric sellers and at this one particular shop these two ladies were standing in front of the bolts of brightly colored fabric. I was tickled to see how they matched the bolts, almost like they were one of them.

Like many New Yorkers, I enjoy the annual Easter Parade down Fifth Avenue. A raucous and joyful event, it attracts hordes of creatively-attired folks of all stripes. On my way over to the parade one year, I was crossing the avenue when I spotted this amazing person next to me heading in the same direction. There was no one else around. I turned toward them, nodded for approval, and took my shot. Only later did I appreciate the great pose and the theatre district background. Sometimes the photography gods are with you.

Halloween is a big holiday in NYC, celebrated by folks of all ages. The annual Halloween Parade is a major event drawing huge crowds.

For me, though, the big events are less compelling than the quieter, more personal moments. I decided to take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, a place I love to shoot. I spotted this family in costume. They didn't seem to mind me taking photos; we were all having a good time despite the fierce wind. I felt uniquely privileged to share this experience with these lovely folks, and to get this photo.

Times Square in center of New York City is teeming with people--New Yorkers, tourists, merchants and costumed characters. The popular Disney cartoon characters are the most prevalent, looking to take a photo with you for a fee. 

 Walking through the plaza one day I noticed this Minnie Mouse character without her head. It was set down nearby. Minnie seemed okay but clearly her head just needed a break.

A fleeting moment where reality and motion blur merge into a layered narrative. A woman, lost in her music, stands still while the city rushes past. In the moving tram, two faces emerge - blurred, distorted, almost ghostly. Are they strangers, or reflections of who she once was, who she could become? To me this photo captures the interplay of identity, time, and the ever-shifting versions of ourselves that exist in motion and stillness alike.

With my back to a local landmark, I observed the crowd on a busy street corner in Cambridge. Cars pass slowly here as tourists often stand in the road to take photos. I noticed the woman in the car, passing through the light, and felt drawn to her expression. I felt that it captured something of the common stress of crowded spaces. I remember feeling excitement and freedom to be in the same place with my camera. The act of photography can change our sense of self in a space.

Looking into a cafe window, I noticed three layers: the neon sign, reflected foliage, and the street corner. The bold and bright optimism of the sign made me smile, and I waited, optimistically, for more. I do love a red coat and a dog, and I love the calm solitude of walking around a city. I also love bold, literal elements in photography. Here, I feel the word is like a stamp of certification.

This image is part of a series in which I capture my children's adventures via their shadows. I believe that the light and shadows highlight the magical side of childhood, and the end result is a whimsical one. All the images are taken candidly in a documentary or street style.

Venus cannot escape the gaze. From the windows, statues of motionless men watch her in silence, stone witnesses who never look away. In the garden, a presence lingers beside her, another gaze grazes her.  And beyond, the camera, ever present, fixes the instant in her eternal memory.  But Venus does not flinch. Only her presence, caught between the vigilance of the sculpted, the living, and the mechanical.

This photo was taken in Miami, February 2022. I was mesmerized by the reflections and colors in this window. There were many scenes at the same time. In this photo, as in others, I intend to question the concepts of “realism” and “truth” of photography. Visual ambiguities are very appealing to me. I believe that this type of photo can stimulate the viewer to look twice. I would like them to stop in front of the image and reflect on what they are looking at. One of my goals is to problematize the viewers’ gaze.

This photo was taken in 2018 in Valencia. It caught my attention to see the workers assemble the scaffolding with ease and lightness and to see this "air castle" being formed in such a short time.

As a teacher and a mother I often feel like I have to struggle for my identity. Self-portraits are the way I fight "against disappearance.” I dressed up for a day by myself at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This is my reflection in the lobby of the museum.

I made this photo while I was making a series pf photographs documenting the Fairfax District of Los Angeles. I was drawn to this man's hair curlers and matching shirt. I asked if I could photograph him, told him what I was doing, and he obliged. The Fairfax district is a long time Orthodox Jewish area, that in the past 20 years has evolved into a fashion hub of Los Angeles and Hollywood. The mixing of culture, style, and history fascinated me and sparked my interest in photographing there.

On September 9th 2023, I participated in the #24HourProject, my first. Participants agree to take and post photos hourly for 24 hours; I participated for five. I became a “photographer for social change” contributing to raising awareness and funds for @camerasforgirls, a Canadian-based charity whose mission is to teach photography to African girls allowing them to become visual story tellers and journalists. As I walked through the streets of New York in search of material to post on the go, I spotted a beautiful woman. I darted in her direction. Shortly after, she was on my Instagram feed.

When I look at this image, I am reminded of how I felt when I made it. It was one of those moments where my heart beat faster. I stopped breathing. I gasped. I clicked. In my heart, I thanked these women that, for a fleeting moment, were in my life.

New York has a quality of light that is specific to modern cities. At times, it illuminates the city’s streets like stage lights in a theater.

Being in the front seat, a cast of characters of an unfolding play emerge from the shadows. Ordinary women and men going about their lives in the busy streets of New York — the hyperreality of the light amplifies the everyday. It brings clarity but it is only superficial. In these brief moments we are free to imagine the plot and motive of these characters on the street.

As I was making my way through a stream of people on a very busy, sunny spring day on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, I noticed this woman: her stylish look, the white pearl earrings, and the white-framed sunglasses made her emerge from the crowd; the glasses in particular denoting a very youthful spirit, “spirito giovanile.”

Strength and vulnerability are not opposing forces, but rather complementary threads. As a street photographer, I am drawn to the presence of women, the way they claim space without apology. Whether they stride through the city with a sharp, knowing gaze or linger in a fleeting moment of introspection, they exude a kind of effortless authority. I find myself seeking out these women—the ones whose nonchalance carries weight, whose gestures speak of confidence earned, whose style is an unspoken language of identity. In my lens, women come first.

On a cold January morning on Park Avenue in New York, I noticed a cloud of steam rising into the winter air. As people crossed the street, the steam enveloped them, briefly blurring their presence. I had finally captured my New York steam image.

Only later, at home, did I notice the steam formed openings resembling eyes and a wide smile. I had been gifted a smiley face. It felt like a metaphor for life: sometimes life smiles at us and we don’t even see it, echoing the reflective, revelatory mood of the song "Into the Mystic".

This image is from my ongoing series, “The Legacy of Marilyn Monroe.”  During the COVID-19 pandemic, I happened upon Monroe’s crypt, where I discovered wet lipstick marks at a time when most of the world was standing six feet apart.  Curious, I began to interview and photograph her devotees, discovering that Marilyn is a symbol of hope for many.

The 26-foot tall sculpture, “Forever Marilyn,” is being sprayed during its installation in Palm Springs.  There is optimism that the sculpture will help revive the city’s lagging tourist economy, which has been decimated by the pandemic.

“Don’t Smile”

What propels me to ask, “Can I take your portrait?” is a warmth I sense, something soft underneath the shell. Taking these portraits, I get inside, even if only for a short while. Interacting with these individuals, with their youthful energy, I find myself both stimulated and grounded.

One of the more interesting things I’ve found is how quickly a connection can be formed between two strangers, with the camera’s lens serving as a conduit. I direct people by saying “Look into my eyes, and whatever you do, don’t smile.” This oddly puts them at ease.

This photo is from my Don’t Smile project, shot in Washington Square Park and the West Village of New York City. Focusing on young adults, I’m stimulated by their persistent youthful energy, creativity and openness. In September 2024, I travelled to Rome to work on my candid street photography portfolio. When I first came upon this colorful construction wall bathed in light, I was focused on capturing silhouettes. I then noticed that I could line up the shadow of the lamppost with the edge of The Colloseum.

I was immediately struck with curiosity as I came upon a gigantic snake slithering up a building’s exterior wall. My eyes then found an elderly woman sitting next to the creature. She was seemingly unfazed, however, tension filled the air as crowds gathering around to witness this unlikely pair.  I decided against photographing the woman’s face, as I felt the mysterious nature of this juxtaposition would be even more profound. Just showing her hands as they clutched her purse, the massive snake only inches away, was enough to tell the story without giving away the ending.

Walking through a park in London, I spotted a person in a captain's hat, colorful sweater, bright yellow skirt and orange sneakers. They appeared to be with a partner in a bright pink cap. The pair was talking with a third person sitting on a bench. I was struck by the bold colors and quickly composed the scene with the lush greenery serving as the perfect backdrop.

Traditional Brazilian folk party dresses for sale. The scene caught my attention due to the contrast of light and shadow, as well as the intensity of the colors. The photo was taken in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2024.

This picture was taken during a trip to Lisbon. I was walking in a park and saw this beautiful frame, like a maze, and I knew in my heart I had to do something with these lines. I waited for a few minutes because I saw a child running. I took three or four pictures, and this one was the ONE. From the very first second, I imagined this photo in black and white, just like a movie.

This photograph was taken in a village near São Paulo, on a foggy day I took this photo with an air of mystery and solitude.

One fine morning in Delhi, by the banks of Yamuna, a story unfolded the contrast between distinct worlds divided by fate and inheritance.

The cold December winds were kind to none, but that morning, two spheres of the society saw the rising sun from different perspectives.

A couple on an elevated platform danced to glory while documenting their love before they tied the knot. A woman, below, cleaned her utensils in the cold water, staring at what destiny offers to different people. The sailing boats in the distance signify that life goes on, whether or not one makes the flight.

Artist Statement

I am a social documentary photographer, and capturing people has always been at the heart of my work. Over many years, I have photographed in challenging and intimate environments, such as psychiatric institutions and prisons, and I even had the opportunity to photograph political figures. I have also accompanied the police on assignments, which has given me valuable experience working in difficult and uncomfortable conditions, all of which taught me to stay calm, observant, and sensitive to complex, often hidden human stories that raise important social and class issues.

The photographs presented in my application are part of my “Visual Dictionary” project, a contemporary visual guide to life in Russia. In this series, I document real scenes, phenomena, and images of everyday life to visually interpret and explain complex social realities.  As a social documentary photographer, people, their stories, and the intricate forces shaping their lives have always been at the heart of my work. Through “Visual Dictionary,” I have developed an approach that blends the search for metaphor, visual depth, and a keen eye for the absurd or poetic in everyday street moments.

During my last visit to NYC, I got to spend a lot of time in the subway. I found it to be a street photographer’s heaven. In this specific case, the way that the girl was sitting caught my eyes, the way her head and arm are sub-framed, and her leg is coming out of no where. In addition, all the other stories of the people around her made a perfect background.

This photo is from my pre-pandemic trip to Egypt in late 2019. As I walked past this alleyway, I saw these two young men turning into the light, with an elderly woman off to the side covering her face. I framed it to get them all in the shot. When I got home—before Covid-19 became part of our collective consciousness—I called the photo “Despair and Hope,” not realizing at the time just how apt that title would become: first the worldwide despair of this unrelenting virus, followed some months later by the hope that a vaccine would soon end it.

I visited Tunisia after the pro-democracy demonstrations of the Arab Spring ended and the president had fled, when you could feel the optimism in the bustling Medina of Tunis. As I turned a corner onto a quiet street, I came upon this perfectly still man standing in a slice of sunlight, as if hesitant to enter the dark alley. I like to think of my photograph as a metaphor for the long-awaited reform the country was experiencing and the uncertainty of the future, with the solitary figure standing in the light of democracy but not knowing what was to come.

If you’re not a local, you may think of Coney Island—the famed seaside city within a city—as always full of people, sunshine, music, hawkers, aromas of hot dogs and cotton candy, bikini-clad women and muscle men showing off their tattoos, and the screams of thrill-seekers plummeting from roller coasters. But as winter sets in and the crowds thin, the feeling can be dark and even ominous. This photo was made on a cold, blustery afternoon in February 2022, when the beach was empty and the boardwalk nearly devoid of people, but the community spirit—and the birds, lots of birds—prevailed.

Embedded with a team of women dancers from a Texas college awaiting their turn to step into the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC, I photographed them, along with the spectators, as they showed expressions ranging from anticipation and nervous excitement to boredom and weariness as time passed. I liked this image in particular for the light hitting the young woman in the center, with the tired little girl on the bottom right and the two women on the left framing the photo. As many street photographers know, it’s what’s happening behind the main event that’s usually far more interesting.

The interactive ”mist garden” on the site of the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, below the iconic Unisphere, naturally attracts kids of all ages on hot summer days. I was happy to freeze these two young girls whirling like dervishes—oblivious to each other yet in sync—in front of the metallic world, its own spin forever suspended in time.

I was traveling from the island of Ischia back to Naples during a rain-soaked week in April 2023. A group of teenagers, all jostling about, got off the ferry as I did. Among them, this boy stood taller than the rest, a natural focal point in the crowd. As the saying goes, the stars (literally in this case) aligned, and I caught this moment just as the sun broke through the heavy clouds, casting a perfect shadow over half the boy’s face. In that split second he was still, allowing me to freeze his image.

The Nostalgia Train that runs in New York City during the holiday season has become so popular—and crowded—that it’s difficult to photograph. This past December I didn’t get much while inside, but when I stepped outside onto the platform, before the train continued on, I saw my moment:  this young boy looking distantly out the window, his gaze not seeming to fix on anything. I wondered what he was thinking. Was this his dream day, riding in the front of a subway car from the 1930s?  Or was he tired, bored, and hot—and just wanting to go home?

As tourists crowded the deck of the Staten Island ferry, lining up for a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty, I noticed this young girl standing on a bench, towering over the crowd and waving to the “Mother of Exiles” in the distance. Looking today at this photograph—from August 2024—it’s possible to read her gesture not as a welcome to immigrants, as the Statue symbolizes, but as a goodbye to human rights and freedom in America. Still, I see hope here—that this country will ultimately find its way back and be more welcoming and inclusive than ever.

This image was taken at the sacred Pushkar Lake in Rajasthan, India. It was one of the very last days of that hectic year, and I very much enjoyed the quiet slow pace of the holy place, walking around it’s narrow streets and temples, when I stumbled upon this scene at the banks of the lake. It immediately resembled some theater stage to me – with figures and objects distributed in a perfect composition – as if there was a secret dialogue going on between the child and the woman, while the sacred cow is just watching the lake. I can see a human profile in the shadow cast by the walled structure, and the small details – a slipper in the foreground and a duck in the middle of the lake – are taking places in an imaginative chessboard, where all of this mind game is played.”

It is not easy to seize that split second magic when everything fits together to make a good photo. It takes a good dose of passion but also perseverance and, eventually, with patience comes the reward. The photo was made in Cape Coast, Ghana. A group of young adults was playing with a ball on the street. A photography session I very much enjoyed. It was a pleasure to have spent some time with them. A nice memory that I am glad to share with you here.

I met Emily in the Riverside neighborhood of Buffalo, NY.  She showed me the tattoo on her arm of her grandmother's house when it was yellow and when she spent so much of her childhood there. We found the house again, and it is now painted blue.

This photo was taken in Times Square, NYC. I remember seeing this woman running around the center of town with a bright pink dress on, and, as she kept running, she started to blend in the bright lights of Times Square. It was in that second that time stopped, all sounds ceased, so that I could capture that moment in time. In my mind she is still running in circles, losing herself in the magical lights of the city.

The photograph depicts the training of Biancofiore, a young hawk, by a southern Italian farmer passionate about falconry. I started to document the hawk training because fascinated by this old discipline by which humans and animals build a relationship of trust, respect and love. The trainer explained me that hawks are independent souls which need affection, time and trust to be trained. I felt that this was a magic connection between the trainer and the hawk I tried to capture.

Artist Statement:

“My Way” is a personal and intimate exploration of El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James), a Christian pilgrimage popular during the Middle Ages to expiate sins and ask pardon or miraculous conversion. In the last decade, the number of people walking along the Way has increased dramatically. Catholics, atheists, agnostics and curious travelers have shown more and more interest in doing the way of St. James. The journey is traditionally covered on foot, by bicycle or by horse, starting from different cities of Europe. In an historical period in which capitalistic materialism deeply imbues lifestyle, I started El Camino Santiago because I felt trapped in the routine, speed, and superficiality of my hectic life. This intimate and lyrical photographic story telling investigates my slow and intense experience of El Camino as an instinctual need of spiritual search and reconnection with my lost Self.

This was taken on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg Brooklyn. I just happened to be passing by and saw people in what appeared to be costume in the pizza shop. I honestly can't remember if it was Halloween or not. But either way I thought what these ladies were wearing was very funny, and managed to get a couple shots of them.

I made this photograph on the street during Milan Fashion Week, outside the venues, where the spectacle on the street has become as significant as the shows themselves. What caught my attention was the persistence of image-making despite the rain. Fashion magazines are used as improvised shelter, while one person holds up a phone to take a selfie. The photograph observes how documenting one’s presence and being visible can matter as much as actually being there.

This image was created as a coping mechanism against several hours-long wait and boredom at a train station where my train was running late. I took my camera out to shoot.

A while later, a train stops on the platform. I noticed a little girl on the train with her father. With just 2% battery remaining, I had to take the chance. I looked at the father who signaled me to go ahead. The little one smiled at me but looked sternly at the camera.

That's when 'The Girl on the Train' was born!

On a street in Manila, between two street stalls, I noticed this girl sitting on the step of a closed shop, she was hiding behind her balloon, as if she wanted to transfer it to real life, or to transport herself into the world of dreams. A very beautiful funny situation.

I was fascinated by a large number of yellow taxis. I really like taxi and bus stations, because there is a lot of variety of people, dynamics, and constant traffic.

I noticed very interesting reflections, so started to photograph. I undoubtedly looked intriguing when photographing the taxi glass. The woman watched me for a while, then approached me, curious, and asked what I was photographing. It was the beginning of a pleasant conversation with her.

Observing people and their way of life while traveling is indeed an intriguing experience. In the case of Kyrgyzstan, the country boasts a well-organized public transportation system, with an extensive network of private minibuses and regular buses, bus stops often offer a fascinating cross-section of society, where individuals from different backgrounds and walks of life converge.

My attention was focused on the observation of women, their lifestyle, their place in society.

The dominant religion is Islam, which can be seen in the way women dress. The society is a mix of several ethnic groups: 74.1% Kyrgyz
, 14.8% Uzbeks, and 
5.0% Russian.

I took the photo in Havana (November 2024), as people waited for food delivery. In Cuba, people wait in long lines for food, at the bank to withdraw money, and for transportation.  This is a complicated, everyday life.  Despite the difficult economic situation, you can feel the joy of life.

The picture was taken during my short trip to Japan in 2024.  Looking for inspiration before the trip,  I studied books and poems on the role of women in Japanese society, now and in the past.

I tried to take images:  portraits, gestures, body language, and eye expressions that would illustrate those readings.

This one represents young woman, self-assured and independent:

I was waiting at a meeting point on a hot day. The woman's long, dark clothing caught my eye. She moved gracefully and lightly, almost floating across the ground towards the dazzling sun. The hand movement reminds me of a ballet dancer. The clothing reminds me of a nun's robe, which contrasts with the bag symbolizing luxury and is interesting on a meta level with the blinding light. I'm glad I was able to capture this fleeting moment.

One afternoon in Akosombo, Ghana, the monsoon rains came hard and heavy. I took shelter and observed how the people were coping with flying debris, wind, and rain. Street vendors were fighting to take down their umbrellas, and children were running home from school. The woman in the photo showed great determination to reach her destination. I took many photos that afternoon, but this one stood out for me.

The photo was taken on the waterfront in Nice. I was drawn to the scene by the detail of the blanket placed under the dog's paws. The man's caring gesture for his four legged friend had moved me. While I was lifting my camera, the dog spotted me and I noticed that both bodies superposed in a striking way taken from a certain angle.

This photo was taken in Quito, Ecuador, in June 2019. I remember having walked the city with that frustrating feeling of not having been able to capture what I saw as the essence of the place. My camera seemed to inspire fear or lassitude with people signaling they did not want their photo taken. I sat down somehow dispirited on the far side of Plaza Francisco, facing the church and observing vans churn out tourists at the luxury hotel on the left and the everyday life flow on the Plaza. I decided to just take in the mood, feel the place and enjoy the vibes of Quito. Not everything can be recorded through a lens.

Suddenly, my eyes were attracted by this Quichua lady sitting right opposite me on the other side, on the doorstep, back to the bolted church doors. She, too, was watching life and following her thoughts, cupping her hands around those cup noodles. It was an intense impression of having found that sudden connection with people I had been trying to establish for hours. I lifted my zoom lens. In my viewfinder I had what I perceive as the essence of Ecuador. A country on the threshold, with a fascinating blend of cultures, the authentic beauty of Ecuadorian people in general and indigenous women in particular, with some doors still firmly bolted, and yet, eyes and mind firmly set on a horizon beyond. This lady is the essence of Ecuador for me.

A group of intrepid seniors swim every day of the year. I have been so fascinated by their resilience that I started chatting to them. One day at the end of October, they had taken "Maurice" for a bath, adorning him with a turquoise bathing cap. Their gallows humor fascinated me, and I quickly shot a candid series without intruding. They later explained that the skeleton had been bought by one member's grandson for Halloween, and the grandfather had pinched it for the day.

This picture is born out of my sudden fascination for the role urban furniture and beach equipment play in our way to engage with each other and relate to the world around us.

With Nice being a highly touristy city, I had given the iconic places like the beach and the blue chairs a very wide berth since I started street photography in 2019. With COVID-19 changing summer plans, I decided to make most of my staycation and explore the sea front. For the first time, I perceived the magic of the blue chairs, riveted to the floor on the Promenade by the sea. Far beyond being mere objects, they seemed to play an important part in the scenes unfolding under my eye. For the Tour de France, some of the chairs got redecorated with the patterns of the jerseys used during the bike race - yellow, green or red polka dots.

On this precise day in August, I was strolling along the Promenade when this scene caught my attention through the joyful giggle of these young ladies. I shot very fast – delighted to get the chance to capture the visual imprint of that sound. The ladies seemed to be focused on a collective untangle with the mask bands caught in one of the friend's hair. They were perfectly aligned on and commited to a common goal. For me, they are the winners of all the champion jerseys the Tour de France provides.

This photo was taken during one of my early morning strolls on the Promenade. I suddenly saw a strange vehicle approaching from the left and lifted my camera before recognizing what it was. I was lucky to snap this wonderous amphibious rickshaw taking the Queen of Summer to the beach.

On an early September morning, I spotted this scene close to a tramway station. From afar, I had only seen a bright green splash of color and was intrigued. My feeling of marvel grew when I identified the green shape as a promer O-mega variant. My favorite part of the scene was the total lack of interest the gentleman on the other side of the bench displayed. Upon inquiry, I found out that this was part of back to school fun at Medical School.

This photo was taken on an exceptionally mild, off-season day in Nice. Hearing the cheerful banter of the men, cI came closer and observed the playful scene. The game, suspended in time, leaves in question who will win, gelling the moment of shared pleasure. The glass of red wine balanced precipitously on the pebble underlines how fragile and yet important passing moments of joy of life are. These men had fun in spades.

I took this photo in August 2022. The intensive heat wave had been briefly broken by an impromptu rain shower. With news of the terrible draught filling the newspapers, the rain was met with joy, even elation. Seeking shelter under a palm tree, I observed the waterfront Promenade in Nice, trying to catch this shift in weather response. These two young girls encapsulated the moment perfectly. One of the girls danced gracefully with the other one filming. The wide sleeves of her top wafting around her made her look like a weightless veilftail bluefish.

"It was a very rainy and grey day in Vladimir Russia. I was walking in the streets with my camera. Suddenly I saw a yellow bus passing me and a woman sitting in the bus wearing a thin raincoat and looking at me. The windows of the bus were steamy.

I thought the moment was gone, but then I turned and saw the bus stopping in front of red traffic lights. I started to run and reached out the bus. She cleaned the steam from the window to see me better and saying hello to me with her hand. I took the picture, we smiled at each other and then the bus drove on. It was an unforgettable moment."

I took the picture in Mardin, Turkey. The sun was just setting, working day was over, and fathers and sons had time to fly kites together. No one was in a hurry for anything. At that moment I felt like life was pretty beautiful.

I walked early in the morning to a beach in Negombo Sri Lanka where the fishermen arrive with their catches. They had large, colorful nets full of fish, and they were tired but happy, laughing and joking as they shook the fish off the nets. Their joy was infectious!

That day I was feeling sad about the end of a relationship. Then I into that person. It was unfortunate but enlightening. I realized I had made the best decision possible, but it still hurt.

To get out of that state, I took my phone and focused on the colorful display and reflections. “A man on display” was born to continuously remind me that vulnerability is ok and that sometimes the flowers you see on a person are a reflection of yourself.

Initially attracted by reflections and colors, I became intrigued with this lady's candid moment, framing and shooting her for a while during a photo walk in NYC. While editing, I noticed some classic street themes: cars, bags, glasses. Voila! I got the narrative: a consumerist lady trapped in a consumerist world, topped by a stunning summer hat, trying to fill the reflected black hole. A modern Renaissance scene with confusing exterior-interior edges. Or, in my sister-in-law's words, 'Just a mom enjoying chilling time for herself.'

I found this scene while waiting for the bus in Prague. I was first trying to make a candid portrait of a girl next to me. When she made eye-contact, I blinked fast and turned my head faking taking photos of the bus just arrived.

What a lucky movement!

This scene was even better with this golden light crossing the two windows and lighting surrounding and defining the shape of these two ladies immersed in their “sad” thoughts, creating a contrast with the beauty of the building reflected doubly framing the photograph.

By replacing the rule of thirds with deliberate symmetry, want it to highlight the striking geometry of the Cineteca Nacional.

The use of complementary colors and harsh midday light transforms the scene into a high-impact, two-dimensional "collage." Finally, the patient inclusion of a human silhouette provides the necessary narrative focal point, adding scale and life to the architectural rigidity. 

“Cinetria” celebrates the intersection of cinema, symmetry, and color within one of Mexico City’s most iconic cultural landmarks.

Porta Portese market is one of my favorite places in Rome, a place of countless faces and stories, rich in history and brimming with stories to tell. That day, wandering aimlessly among the stalls, I came across one selling vintage cameras, old newspapers, and antique paintings. There, the captivating face of a young woman appeared reflected within the circle of a mirror, instantly drawing my eye.  I couldn’t let the moment slip away!  Mirrors, like Alice in Wonderland, are more than just reflections of reality.  They are an endless source of imagination.

Each summer, during my visits to my hometown Kuopio in Finland,I return to the public beach with its iconic diving tower. I’ve been photographing the place since 2018. This shot I took 2024. I followed the woman in the photo as she prepared to swim and wrapped her hair into a bun, and at the same time I took a few photos of her. This image captured a decisive moment, as a swimmer wearing red trunks happened to jump from the diving tower just then.

Van Der Zee’s 1932 image, Harlem Couple, depicts a black couple in fur coats next to an exclusive, expensive Cadillac. Images such as these were an impetus in the Great Migration insomuch as they gave form to the possibilities of life outside the South, a place rife with terrors, indignities, and exploitation but a place a majority of African Americans called home. This picture is very much an homage to Van Der Zee’s 1932 image. The Great Migration is long over, but the power of images to fuel imagination, reset narrative, and compel action remains.

New York’s 5th Avenue is transformed during the winter season by holiday decorations. Local residents and tourists flock to the street to embrace the festive mood. One afternoon I noticed this tall well-dressed man in vintage white fur and green glasses viewing the holiday windows at Saks Fifth Avenue department store. I waited for him to approach a spot where he was illuminated by the late afternoon light and that is when I made this image. The sunlight highlighted his elegance and revealed his left hand covered in a red orange glove holding his jacket closed.

I was standing on the corner as the sunlight was reflected from the nearby buildings onto the people walking down the street.

It was the holiday season and there were crowds of people with shopping bags full of gifts.

I kept an eye further down the street to see those approaching as the confident stride of this woman with her hat and blond tresses caught my eye.

How proud she was strutting down the street modestly flaunting her unique style.

I could see her approaching as she was separated from the crowd and I was able to capture her alone on the sidewalk at that brief moment in time; her gift to me.

As soon as the weather begins to warm, ice cream trucks begin to appear on many corners all over New York City. They attract customers of all ages. Food trucks of all kinds are places often surrounded by crowds waiting to purchase the delicious offering the mobile restaurant is serving that day. I often stop to photograph the developing scenes of everyday life that revolve around these food trucks while walking the streets of the City.

This image was taken on a very hot summer afternoon on the corner of 5th Avenue and 45th Street. On this day the ice cream truck was parked close to the corner partially obscured by the glass building. I recall that it was the time of day when the light evenly illuminated the scene. I have photographed from this location before as the glass of the building provides a wonderful reflective surface to add dimensionality to a scene. I waited and photographed in this place for at least 30 minutes as the people stopped to purchase ice cream. This image of the man with his double scoop and his apparition evokes the pleasure of ice cream on a hot summer afternoon.

I had the opportunity to photograph in Kolkata over the course of a few days on a trip exploring Eastern India. One of the most colorful, chaotic and intoxicating places to photograph in Kolkata is the Mullik Ghat Flower Market. The action begins in the early morning in this wholesale market where flowers are brought in, sold and carried away. Both men and women participate in these activities, which continue into the late evening hours. In the back of the market a covered dark passageway exists where the sunlight peaks through many openings highlighting the people passing through the corridor. Most of the workers transporting their goods to and from the market through this passageway are on foot, some on bicycle and others with hand trucks. I’m intrigued by how individuals carry themselves as they perform their everyday routines. This candid image was captured during this time I spent at the market observing the daily pace of life in this vibrant and crowded Indian city.

One beautiful summer day, I stopped to enjoy the view of the ocean from the boardwalk in Coney Island when I noticed this man with his bird. He is a street performer out at the beach and he usually has a menagerie of birds that provide entertainment and a reason for the passersby to stop and listen to his tunes. He was on a break and I noticed he had one of his birds perched on his shoulder. As I was beginning to shoot a portrait of the man and his bird from the rear view, suddenly the bird looked as if it was going to fly away and then the man waved one of his hands around to perhaps settle the bird or to keep the bird from scratching him. This image was captured in that moment. After taking the shot, I realized that the man was wearing a hat covered in a plume of furry material and I noticed that his shirt was covered in bird poop. Some might say he was one lucky man that day!

And I realized that I too was lucky that day, as this moment may have been lost if I had simply walked away form this scene, missing this remarkable image.

In the flash of a few seconds, the woman with the red hair walked past me on the street. As she stopped at the corner for a red light before crossing 5th Avenue I noticed how the shape of her hairdo mimicked the pattern on her jacket. Against the backdrop of the muted color buildings of New York City and the shadows they create, her hair radiated in the afternoon sun. The perfect upswept hairdo held in place with hairspray and bobby pins became as fixed and statuesque as the architecture of the buildings in the background.

The streets were void of people in the early days of the pandemic.

I focused my attention on the remnants of commerce, the windows and signs used to entice customers. A billboard of a woman with blood red lips triggered images of my own mother’s red lips. I photographed the scene, but the images were unsuccessful. Several days later, I returned when the sunlight created specular reflections of the buildings from across the street enmeshed into the advertisement. I moved up close to the sign and began to photograph the woman. The captured reflection was inspired by my personal memory.

This project is a series of candid portraits of strangers made on the streets of New York City. I go out with no expectations of subject matter other than looking for a moment to memorialize. The resulting photograph is real for the subject as well as myself, yet it may not be a truthful representation of what actually occurred. The people in the photographs all possess a characteristic, gesture, or physical trait that I identify as part of my own story. The series is a composite of pieces of my life – a self-portrait.

This candid portrait of a stranger was made on the streets of New York City. Initially, I noticed her standing in the middle of the plaza on Broadway. She had a full afro hairdo and a gentle smile, both of which caught my eye by the way she was positioned and highlighted against the signage in Times Square.

Family and friends gather on 5th Avenue on Easter Sunday in New York City to celebrate and show off their frilly costumes designed by hand and/or assembled from pieces acquired from stores. I was observing as some of the families arrived in the early part of the day when a woman wearing a large plain bonnet bent down to greet a child. At that moment I made this image with her hat filling the frame as the sunlight transformed it into a minimalist sculpture of curved lines and muted color.

On a warm summer day as I walked on University Place, I noticed two women stopped momentarily in a pocket of light on the sidewalk. One was wearing a shocking pink blouse and a turquoise blue hat. The other woman carrying a bouquet of chrysanthemum flowers in pink, yellow and red was dressed in an acid yellow blouse with her hair dyed a bright scarlet red. The exquisite bouquet of colors appeared for a brief moment and then the women quickly disappeared from my view as they walked out of the light and into the shadows on the sidewalk.

The streets of New York are converted to open-air food festivals during the summer months. Alternate locations and themes offer an opportunity to enjoy the many international cuisines represented by numerous restaurants and street vendors in New York City. New Yorkers mix with tourists to share the opportunity to taste small bites and enjoy the celebrations. These sunny summer afternoons bring out friends and families including their household pets. This beautiful sunny afternoon on 8th Avenue in midtown was a perfect day to take a beloved bearded dragon out for a walk to soak up the warmth of the sun.

Crowds gathered in Times Square to view the 2024 Solar Eclipse.  The light of the day was magical and the excitement of the people palpable as the time of the eclipse was approaching. The position of the sun was continually changing so the people needed to shift their positions to get a clear line of sight of the sun as it moved between the buildings in the skyline. I captured this moment at 3:02PM when the moon was eclipsing about half of the sun and the people were crowded together, transfixed on the unobstructed view of the event.

The sun is low in the sky during the winter months.  It shines down 5th Avenue in the late afternoon highlighting the corners. People pause at the corners waiting for a green light to cross the street. A young woman with long wavy brown hair wearing a golden puff coat and white sunglasses suddenly turned around to see what was behind her on the street.  I made this image at the moment she rotated her position as I was standing right in front of her. She stood out from the group of people all facing in the opposite direction.

A man dressed in a black coat and hat with a bag carried across his shoulder walked confidently into the steam rising up from under the city streets. He persevered through this unsettled moment with a sense of  purpose and determination.

In June 2025, I was photographing the participants of the Asian American Pacific Islander Parade as they were gathering on 44th Street before the march up 6th Avenue. I noticed a Hmong American woman in the front seat of one of the showcased cars. I crouched down and leaned in close to get an image of the woman through the car windshield. The light bent as it bounced off the glass creating a bit of magic as it lit the silver crown on her head. Then I noticed the reflection of the NYC building encasing her in a graphic frame.

I knew when I saw her beautiful face that I had to capture her image and she posed for me with an expression of hope and happiness that I recognized her beauty.

While photographing a wedding party on the plaza of Santo Domingo Church in Oaxaca City, Mexico, I spotted two stilt walkers getting ready to join the celebration. As they rose up on their stilts in the late afternoon light, they cast playful shadows on the luminous yellow façade of the church.

I met this girl during the 2019 Ballinasloe Horse Fair in Ireland. Like many women and girls in the Irish Traveller community, she enjoyed dressing up and strolling along the high street of Ballinasloe with a group of similarly-garbed friends. She caught my eye, gave me a nod and when I raised my camera, struck a series of fierce poses. And the cigarette? It’s made of candy and a seemingly-favorite prop of young Traveller girls who come to the fair, eager to dress up and show off for the boys.

I was traveling in my country and saw local kids playing soccer. The children saw the camera and liked it very much. They rushed over and told me to take a picture of them looking handsome (in case one day they end up playing professional football and become famous so there will be nice pictures). I wanted to take a unique image. When the photo was taken, the children hurriedly asked to come and see it. They liked it very much. Photographs can connect our feelings.

I was walking Berlin, when I noticed a spot with nice colors, and right behind, a lady in a very elegant dress, sitting behind a fan, looking at her mobile phone. I approached quietly, with time enough to make this picture. It was like photographing Audrey Hepburn on a movie break. I just loved her outfit and those fan colors.

Summertime, early morning, in Arles, before the whole photo festival activity begins. I saw the nice building in the reflections and the colourful circles decorating the shop at the window. The nice silhouette of a woman passing just completed the scene.

I took this image, because I like moments when several stories intersect, and, seeing this view from afar, I believed this could be one of them. I ran towards this spot, taking care to keep well away from the ox. Nobody payed me any attention as I shot several frames. A boat full of tourists was also present and unavoidable near the middle of my frame. But then, their story also intersected with those of the others, and mine, if only for a couple of minutes.

It is said those who bathe at Ganga in its pure water are forever protected from danger, get rid of generations of sins, and are purified immediately. It is a spiritual experience for many, and witnessing those moments can be, too. I couldn’t help but stop and observe the way this woman was in her own world, protected in the embrace of water. Past, present, and future: all is connected to the holy river in India.

The Ganges is, in India, the beginning and end of everything, a symbol of faith, and a meeting point for pilgrims from all over India and the world.  In this image taken by the river, a mother bathes her young son with this sacred water, while her daughter shares in the moment and tradition, doing the same by herself, separately but nearby.

The flow of life by the Ganges is made up by millions of these scenes, each telling a story of existence and coexistence that is part of the whole.

I love the Tate Modern in London, I visit a lot and I thought I had explored every inch of it but I had somehow missed a small balcony on one of the upper floors. The ground surrounding the building becomes highly reflective when it rains and this balcony gave me an amazing vantage point to capture all the lovely reflections and colourful umbrellas! This couple's matching shoes caught my eye first as they approached, then they began to walk in sync for a few steps so I quickly snapped a few frames. When looking back at what I had captured, this frame stood out the most as I love how they mirror each other in every way.

In October 2019, I joined hundreds of thousands of people in an Anti-Brexit march through London. At one point, I got caught up in a large crowd and was swept past another crowd standing behind barriers looking quite bored. Using my phone because it was already in my hand, I held my arms above my head and quickly took a few shots of that crowd. When I looked at what I had got, I laughed out loud as I had managed to capture quite a few interesting looking faces, especially one particular gentleman who was looking right at the camera.

Airport at 3.58pm….It was 3.58pm at the departure area of London Heathrow airport. The afternoon sun was shining mercilessly. This silhouette behind the glass panel captured my attention while I was making my way for check in. I found this scene so beautiful and relatable that it made me paused my footsteps to capture this fleeting feeling. There was an air of mystery and desolation surrounding this fading silhouette. Was it just me, or was she feeling sad about departing from her loved ones too?

I enjoy taking single exposure photos with unrelated things and people being at the same time and at the same place. This is because I often wonder why is it that we get to see and know some people and yet never others. Is there some kind of fate between people, and will this "same time and same place" window of opportunity further advance people from being "unrelated" to being "related" at a later time?

I love creative challenges when it comes to visual compositions. While walking past this place, I noticed beautiful lights hitting on different spots around this area. Using my distinctive photography style, this photo is a mixture of reflections, shadows, silhouettes and geometry.

I feel happy with myself because am able to think out of the box and break through the conventional way of photographing at this popular location among photographers.

I always enjoy photographing moments where multiple situations are paralleling happenings within one single time in our life. It is such an interesting beauty that most people do not notice. In this photo, I saw some reflections of people on the glass. They were actually walking quite a distance away from my spot. A man also walked hurriedly in front of me but behind this glass. That's when I shot this image where both parties were together in one single exposure and yet, they were located very far away from each other and would never have met.

Fener has been home to Orthodox Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities for centuries. My grandmother is from a Muslim family and grew up in these very streets playing with her Christian and Jewish friends. Her stories brought me to Fener, Istanbul, where our ancestors lived in peace with their neighbors for a very long time. At the age of 93, my grandmother passed away in October, 2020, leaving all these stories to me. Now, the multicultural voice of Fener is a thing of the past, but this little kid makes me think of all children playing under the same sky.

This photo forms part of an ongoing project exploring what remains after we die. Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges, is a profoundly significant place in the Hindu religion to release the ashes of loved ones into the waters of “Mother Ganga”. This place draws people from all over India for spiritual and religious reasons. In the early morning light, I was struck by the interplay of smoke, silence and the sacred river. The cremation ritual, while deeply personal for families, is a daily routine for the workers who facilitate it.

Grief is a quiet kind of isolation, one that lingers even in the presence of others. It’s the aching effort of trying to show up, to listen, to care, when time itself feels suspended. You hear the words of a friend, their life continuing, their worries tangible and real, but they feel like they belong to a world you no longer inhabit. I sat with her, waiting for the morgue to call and let me know when his remains would be released. With a cocktail and a brave face.

The photo was taken on a warm, summer day at the Parc Champ de Mars in the heart of Colmar, France. My best friend and I were stranded on our way to Angers, a place we spent an exchange year in 1992. This time, Covid was on the rise, and we had to stay close to the border of Germany. It was a lovely surprise to discover this town, a place we would otherwise have hurried through on our way to Angers.

Every year MADO, the great LGBTIQ+ Pride party, is held in the center of the city of Madrid, a great festival to celebrate and show diversity. Spain has one of the most advanced laws in the world on equal rights for this community. The most important central act being the State Demonstration of LGBTIQ+ pride, to which these images belong.

This is a portrait taken on the boardwalk at Coney Island. I love that Coney has come back to life this summer after having been partially shut down due to COVID-19 last year. It brings me such joy to meet and photograph these vibrant characters as I roam the boardwalk. Coney truly is a paradise for portrait photography. It never disappoints.

This is a series of images taken during the 2021 San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy, NYC. The festival was canceled last year due to COVID-19. This year, the festival was back in full swing. People flocked to Mulberry Street where they could enjoy a delicious meal outdoors at an Italian restaurant, or savor a slice of pizza, rice balls, cannolis, and much more. I roamed Mulberry street for five days capturing life’s simple moments. My jeans are a little more snug, but it was worth every cannoli!

As I strolled the streets around Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, I was drawn to the light and colors of the buildings, and tried to create a layering of shapes, reflections, distortions, and bold colors. The buildings are low, the sun brightens the streets and puts the buildings in the spotlight; the window frame of the car whooshes us through the image.

This photo was taken on my birthday. Being a Pisces, I decided to spend the afternoon by the water: Asbury Park, New Jersey. Strolling along the boardwalk, I found the Asbury Park Casino, long abandoned and dilapidated. There were large puddles washed in by an earlier rainstorm, a wall of windows with a mosaic of missing panes. I patiently stood in the tunnel-like space, waiting for passersby to frame themselves and their reflections. I tried shooting different angles: High, low, more graphic or more realistic, and different exposures.

Out of 60 images; this is the one I think works best.

This photo was taken in August, 2023 on the Coney Island Boardwalk. I was strolling along with my camera and noticed a large pink commotion ahead: about 15 women all lavishly dressed in pink. I asked if they were celebrating a bridal shower or a birthday. They responded immediately, ”We’re Barbies!” They were strutting along the boardwalk full of sass, and they stopped for a moment in front of the carnival booths. This was my favorite photo of the series because they were all together, but also immersed in their own moments.

This photo was taken on a cold, March Sunday in Coney Island.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club gathers every Sunday from November to April to swim in the frigid Atlantic Ocean. I’m always awestruck by their bravery. This particular Sunday, I found Sam’s joy and exhilaration contagious. Sam, a fairly new Polar Bear and opera singer, gave me goosebumps with her pure joy at being in the ice-cold water.

I love taking photos with texture. Wandering around Little India in Singapore, I found myself looking through the plastic curtain of a textile stall with people walking by. I loved the ethereal texture the plastic sheet created over the person.

I wander and look for something that catches my eye. I remember walking around Bryant Park and noticing the arrangement of these three women, leaning on each other, shoeless, sprawled out to rest. I quickly composed the shot before they moved or became aware of me.

As I walked down a street in Paris I was attracted to the reflections on the windows of a bus and took a few images as I approached it. Continuing on I noticed the man's gesture and quickly took the frame. He seems deep in contemplation or perhaps just exhausted after a long day.

Venice, 2022 - I picked Venice to travel to and photograph, far enough from the Netherlands, where my mother took her last breath in 2020, yet close enough to have some familiarity for me. This image perfectly reflects my mood on that first day; me trying to be focused and enjoy this city, yet I wasn't succeeding. My thoughts and mood distorted instead.

The end of the parade, people are scattering in all directions. The “mermaids” are no longer making sure they are performing for the many cameras. I see her, her magnificent outfit, she sees me (but pretends she doesn’t) and gives me one last beautiful performance.

It was late winter and the sky was a monochromatic grey. I had brought Sophia, my eight year old grand daughter to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. We were headed to the permanent collection, an excellent place to introduce art history to a young mind. At the entry we found we had the entire neoclassical courtyard to ourselves. We walked down the northern colonnade when suddenly a woman in a black coat hurried by. I pulled out my camera, interested in the stark contrast between the rhythm of columns and the flight of the woman. Sophia then asked me why I am always taking pictures. Before I could answer, I not only had a picture that interested me, one with strong structural elements balanced with movement, perspective and scale but I had the opportunity to have a talk with Sophia about seeing and framing our visual world. The camera, I told her nurtures our imagination; it empowers us to see light, form and color in new ways. It makes us storytellers and inspires us to find meaning and beauty where and when it’s least expected.

I was on a ferry in the Aegean Sea about to open a heavy door to the deck. There was a small window in the door, and I thought the industrial glass could be a nice filter for a photograph of a scene beyond. As I waited for a scene to appear, I saw a woman descend the deck staircase. When she got to the deck she paused and stood directly within the glass frame; I watched as the breeze caught wisps of her hair as we sailed. The textured glass adds a layer to this otherwise-carefree picture, and this element of abstraction is what, for me, makes the picture interesting.

It’s late October in San Francisco when light appears warm and diffused. I was composing a picture, a minimal portrait of place, contrasting the peaceful blues of the Pacific Ocean to the raw architectural grays framing the view. However, time dramatically altered my plan, and the most unexpected became my subject. I could not have predicted the play of color, scale, characters, and humor that would eventually emerge.

This picture is part of a series called "Impresiones,” meant to depict how we exist through the moments and places we pass by. I wrote a small text about it:

"Existo momentaneamente. Me imprimo distinto en cada momento que pasa, persona que conozco, lugar que habito. Por eso, me concretizo en las huellas que dejo, en tiempos congelados. Son impresiones de mi yo actual, materializaciones de mi consciencia. Pruebas efímeras de mi existencia.”

In this photo, which is part of a larger project, I use the camera’s ability to focus, reframe, and capture lightness and darkness, form and shape to tell a story about the interconnectedness of people, places, and things in the world’s built and natural environments.

Observed in, but extracted from, its original context the shadowed lines of this building in Valle Gran Rey, captured in the perfect light of the Canary Islands, takes on a meaning beyond itself and across geographies, taking the viewer to a place of peace and warmth both part of, and apart from, their own locale.

This was taken the 14th of July in 2022. People were watching the end of the soldiers parade, to see them before they climb into the buses.

I was watching the crowd; I sat on the ground and watched what was going on at this level and it was much more interesting.

Kids lost in anonymous legs, bored. This made me think how boring most of the adults were when I as a child. And at this precise moment I was growing tired when this adorable out of time little girl offered me this gift.

I love to find intriguing and unexpected moments in the everyday, wherever in the world I may be. This was certainly one of those. Growing up with the iconic Coca Cola red and vibrant advertising brand, the familiarity and attraction was still with me when I happened across this photoshoot in Fez, Morocco. The centuries old character of Morocco provided the backdrop for this juxtaposition of East meets West. The fabulous character, perfectly styled, provided the ‘quirk’ to make this scene particularly surreal. I love to wonder about what history may lay behind the red painted roller door too.

An unexpected trip to Nice, France resulted in a series of images of this iconic beach playground. The sense of fun and freedom was never more evident than in this image of a trio of girls enjoying the beach and relaxing on a bed of pebbles. I was elated that there was an elevated walkway that enabled me to get this particular viewpoint. I loved the colors, body language, and placement of the Barbie-like figures. Every time I look at this image it transports me back to the sun, fun, and sense of timelessness I experienced on that trip.

Taken in a narrow street in Querétaro, Mexico, on Día de los Muertos, I was struck by the intense stare of this girl dressed as the character Chucky. With the doll held tightly, there was something both playful and unsettling about her—perfect for this celebration. She never once broke character. For a moment, fiction felt real, and the street became the stage.

“Boy on Horse” was taken in an underprivileged area of the Dublin suburbs called Ballymun. I came across him just like this. I was struck by his pose and his beauty. He was so comfortable with the horse even though it had no saddle on. This was quite a common site in the suburbs of Dublin in the 90's when this photo was taken.

Along an amber dusted highway in Nevada sits Virginia City, a timeworn mining town clinging to a mile-high mountain peak. This boomtown was home to the Comstock Lode of 1859, the United States’ first major silver ore discovery, and today is the nation’s second-largest national historic landmark, offering an “authentic” 1860s experience that mythologizes histories of the American West. Tailings uses analogue photography (35mm & 120mm), sound art, and personal testimony to unpack how Virginia City’s custom of storytelling and demonstrative celebration of its Western folklore affect how place and identity are rendered, remembered, and endlessly remade.

At the end of every August, street vendors in downtown Puebla celebrate our Lady of Saint Rosa de Lima. They organize a Free Wrestling match for all the people in the neighborhood. Families gather to cheer the Lucha Libre wrestlers (luchadores). Children jump and play in the ring while waiting for the show to start. People get very passionate about who they like or not, no matter what age. Cristobalina (in the middle) and her family came to cheer a rookie wrestler. The Mexican culture is very family-oriented, and it's always a joy seeing people together and sharing significant moments.

-Sorrow- is the reflection of how in certain situationsMexicans come to feel, always fighting against a wall, impossible to get out, sadness, poverty, death.I feel that there is empathy in everyday life, the color red reflects for me the blood of so many innocent people who have disappeared or died without any explanation, and the main character crying or wiping his eyes of sadness.I felt adrenaline when catching the image and a lot of sadness after taking a few steps knowing that there are so many of us who are in that situation in Latin America.

Streets of this living heritage in Badami are an extension of the homes, where the inhabitant's day-to-day activities pan out effortlessly. Seen here is a child, mouthing a toy probably, as a cow walks by casually next to her, and her mother keeps an eye on her. Standing there in the narrow pedestrian street with an impulse to keep moving, I stayed a bit longer until I got a close-up of the cow walking straight toward me to make the picture come together.

This is one of those photos where everything just came together – the light, shadows, and action, and it hits on that specific joy of summer in the city. The black and white helps emphasize the composition and the play of light and dark, as well as the beauty of the water droplets, and it makes it hard to determine exactly when it was taken, which works well for a scene that has repeated itself over and over through the decades.

Caught in the act of pure innocence: unfiltered and universally understood. A young girl's simple act of curiosity evokes a reminder of those instances of exploration and discovery.

In the timeless setting of Bena Village on Flores Island, Indonesia, a young girl, stands amidst the backdrop of her ancestral home, her attention entirely absorbed in the universal, yet often private, act of exploration with a finger up her nose.

While capturing a fleeting moment, it speaks volumes about the universality of childhood and the purity of moments unspoiled by self-awareness, inviting viewers to reminisce about their moments of innocent exploration.

This image is meaningful to me, as it was taken soon after a near-fatal emergency surgery. While recuperating, I watched a group of ballet dancers rehearsing outside. This little girl was entranced and kept walking back and forth with her lollipop watching them intently. At the end, her father brought her up to the stage to meet them, and I wondered if she, too, was having a life-changing moment.

Something magical happens when snow falls on the city. Regular sounds of bustling traffic, planes flying overhead, and people gathering are replaced by a muffled silence. I was downtown in a building when I saw this lone person walking through the heavy snowfall. I could imagine what that felt like and was filled with a sense of peace.

This image was taken on the Cape during a blizzard. I could barely feel my hands to even hold the camera, but I was trying to achieve a tunnel effect with the flash to show the velocity of high winds and exciting mystery of that moment.

My family went on a trip to England and Scotland in 2019 for my mother's 80th birthday. I have many relatives from the St. Andrews area, so deep roots there. We were in the city trying to figure out where to go next, and I love the way there are lots of stories, connections, and emotions in this moment.

It is often more interesting to see people watching something than the thing itself. Mallory Square is the best-known spot to watch the sunset in Key West--people travel from around the world just to see it. This family was full of joy and contemplation watching it that evening.

This photo was taken at an alpaca farm on San Juan Island, WA in 2023. These animals are wonderful characters, each with a funny mop top, wide-set eyes, and a serious underbite. This image amused me, because it looked a bit like an absurd crime scene. It was finalist for Best Street Photograph of the Year at the Paris International Street Photography Awards, 2023.

Street photographers are often drawn to people wearing the same clothing. I had just noticed these two brothers playing by the shore, and they reminded me of my sons, who had played at that same spot at that age. A huge ferry came into view, and right away I saw how the double smokestacks echoed the color of their yellow swim shorts. I got closer hoping the boys would get next to each other when the steamship went by—and they did!

This photo was taken on May 3rd, 2022, when more than 17,000 people gathered in Foley Square, NYC to protest the overturning of Roe vs Wade.  It was an incredibly-impassioned demonstration that still feels timely today.

Springtime in Rockefeller Plaza, New York City. Two women at an outdoor café were engaged in an animated conversation. Their reflection in a nearby storefront caught my eye: the curved lines of their silhouettes juxtaposed against the colorful, geometric patterns of the window display—a subtle reminder of how integral hand gestures are to our daily communication.

I've always wanted to capture soap bubbles, because they remind me of childhood and good things. I expected this to be a shot with a kid playing, but I never expected to capture a grown woman trying to catch a bubble. The most beautiful things come from the unexpected. I love how, even if you can't clearly see her face, you can definitely feel the happiness and freedom of the moment.

I'm a planner by nature, and street photography reminds me to stay open to the unexpected. On a beautiful fall day, I sat down on the ground near the Washington Square Arch, hoping to get some clean shots of the skateboarders who had just set a traffic barrel on its side. But it's New York City, so people kept walking through in every direction. Instead of the sequence I originally intended of a skater going over the barrel, I ended up embracing the chaos, and that resulted in much more interesting images. This frame is my favorite.

This image is part of a series exploring loneliness in the city. People live in close physical proximity yet lack of connection and fragmentation permeate cities and the human condition. Ordered geometric compositions provide a contrasting backdrop to the emotion conveyed by the subject.

During the gypsies Pilgrimage in south of France I saw this gypsy's kid playing along the sea with this tattoo. I wanted to ask permission to his parents for picture and I realised that the father had same tattoo. I asked them if I can take their backs together.

It was a peacefull moment just before the intense energy of the procession with a specific cloudy lights. There were so much photographers agressive that I needed a break far from the crowd. I appreciated this moment where I could take the time to create something unique with this sympathic family.

I spent my 50th birthday celebrating in NYC. Just switching over to a mirrorless set up, I was hoping that I could lighten my load for travel and street photography. Of course it was raining and cold but I was determined to test out my new gear. I spent the weekend walking all over NYC, making images. This shot was taken in the Flatiron district during rush hour. I wanted to capture a New York City icon and the hustle and bustle in an interesting way and also work with what Mother Nature had thrown at me for my visit.

I was in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities for street photography, when I came across this scene. A busy sidewalk with people rushing about and a store front window display. I was drawn to the juxtaposition of the mannequins watching the pedestrians and the pedestrians oblivious to the watchful eyes of the mannequins. Ironically this was just a few weeks before Covid shut down everything. It makes me wonder how this scene would have been different just a short time later.

As I was leaving a gathering in San Miguel de Allende, there were people of all ages dancing and celebrating, including a group of teenagers on their way home from school. I had noticed this young couple earlier in the crowd obviously enamored with each other. As I made my way to the corner to cross the street, I saw them again on the opposite corner. They were saying their 'goodbyes,' oblivious to life around them. After the kiss they each turned and quickly went their separate ways, but not before I had a chance to snap this shot.

"No friends but the mountains" is a Kurdish proverb used to express the abandonment, betrayal, and loneliness that the Kurds have experienced and still experience. However, as a semi-stateless ethnic minority, one that is also very much fragmented across boarders, the Iraqi Kurds are some of the most hospitable, generous and kind people that I have ever met, bidding the question of how? How is a friendless society so friendly? One woman's answer was hope. Hope for change and a better future.

I have been photographing Pashupatinath, the most important Hindu site in Nepal, for ten years, and it never ceases to amaze me how life and death manifest in a single place. On one side of the narrow Bagmati River, bodies burn on funeral pyres, rituals are performed, and families mourn their dead. On the other, strangers watch the flames in quiet contemplation, young lovers hold hands and take selfies, and candy floss is for sale. It is the circle of life at its purest, where even boredom, waiting for the next customer, exists naturally alongside grief, devotion, and joy.

I spotted him from a distance as he drove and then pushed his car along the Rockaway boardwalk as part of a festival. The moment felt beautifully surreal.

As a photographer inspired by the work of Martin Parr, I enjoy taking photos at tourist attractions and of the people who visit them. Certain attractions are associated with "rituals" or poses that people recreate while visiting, and I am endlessly fascinated and entertained by watching these scenes unfold.

While at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I wanted to capture both the sense of chaos and the repetition of movement on constant display.

On a bitterly cold day in January , I found myself sitting inside a mall waiting for my daughters who had conspiringly gone off to buy a gift. The winter sun was shining through several large windows, bathing shoppers in a golden light and boldly casting their shadows. Since the backdrop of the concrete architecture felt aesthetically too cold to photograph directly, I found myself looking around to find a more subtle way of highlighting the movement and emphasizing this beautiful light, and saw the forms of the people reflected in the window of a nearby shop. Due to January sales, there were no items directly behind the glass but just bold bands of fuchsia and pale pink coloured paper creating a more suggestive and theatrical scene.

I found myself positioned behind this construction tarp pondering the notion of perspective. Closing my eyes, I tried to envision this scene hundreds of years earlier, and kept on returning to the artisans whose toiling labors led to the construction of the buildings before and behind me—whose names, like the men working on the scaffolding above me, would not be part of the popular retelling of the stories. Peering through the tarp, the texture reminded me of an ancient painting or cyanotype—a timeless scene. Unbeknownst to this little boy, I am witness to his face taking in the Taj Mahal.

Between Barcelona and Tarragona, on the coast of Spain, there is a tradition where people come together to build human towers. It's a very special sport, because old and young, women and men train three times a week. When they build up, it’s getting quiet, everybody pays attention and helps each other. The concentration is flickering through the room, they rely on each other, hold together, build up and build down together. It's a cohesion which holds them together, giving them the value of belonging.

About a year ago, on a pleasant sunny day, I was walking around 5th Avenue in NYC. I spotted this Madmen-esque group briskly walking near Rockefeller Center. They looked out of place with the men were wearing fedoras and what appeared to be vintage clothing - all faces covered in the same masks. I had no idea where they came from, nor where they were going. I immediately began to follow, making sure to stay ahead of them. I managed to take several photos before they disappeared into a building lobby.

Seeing Red….On a hot day in NYC, I was attracted to the reflection of the crosswalk lines on a truck. The texture on the siding of the truck, made the lines appear wavy as though they were melting.

I waited for an interesting subject to walk by. This lady, wearing a hat to protect herself from the sun, seemed appropriate and fit perfectly into the background. The fact that she was carrying a red bag was an extra that completed the image for a hot day, as well as firming up my decision to display this image in color.

When it is cold outside, I have a tendency to walk through indoor venues along my route to warm up. While doing so one day, I was intrigued by a curving staircase that didn’t seem to lead anywhere. It had a shiny bannister that glistened as it reflected the light from a skylight above. I knew this background provided an opportunity to create an interesting image. After exploring all of the possible angles, I decided that the view from the bottom of the steps worked best. From this perspective, the shape of this bannister rendered incredible leading lines. As it turned out, this was actually a busy staircase and it did lead somewhere. There was a food shop hidden at the top of the steps and it was lunchtime. As I prepared to create this image, I set up the composition as an abstract with the bannister as the subject and then waited. After many attempts, the scene was completed when a single figure was captured entering the frame in just the right position.

This image was made along Madison Avenue in New York City on a chilly winter evening. I was attracted to the bright colors that produced such a glaring contrast to the darkness on the street. Passersby, in a hurry to get to their destinations, were oblivious to the warm glow being generated by these super moons.

It was a bright and clear spring day as I walked along Fifth Avenue near Rockefeller Center. I was drawn to the eyes in the window of one of the retail stores, and, taking advantage of the sunny day, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to create an interesting reflection.

It was a bright and sunny day in early March, and as I walked through Times Square, I was drawn to the beautiful shadows being created by the passersby and tried to determine how to make an interesting image. Once I saw the red tights, I knew what I wanted to do.

Walking on the bright side of the street is always more entertaining, especially for photographers – and on that sunny side, what’s more intriguing than having spectators looking back at you and the street wearing their shades?

This image was taken in the fall of 2020 in NYC. More than six months into the pandemic, anything that represented a bright or sunny perspective was more than welcome. All I thought about as I made this image was “the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

While exploring the streets of New York City in search of photo opportunities, I noticed a woman wearing a distinctive pair of shoes that gave the impression she was walking on her tiptoes. Taking advantage of the moment she walked passed me, I pressed the shutter.  Upon reviewing the image at home, I realized that my timing had resulted in a shot that captured only one of her legs, which enhanced the photo and added to its appeal.

The unexpected sightings while walking the streets of NYC never fail to amaze me.  As I was returning home from the supermarket, I stumbled upon a perfect scene––a canine model showcasing a pair of shoes, while a woman, standing alongside, elegantly modeled a complementary outfit.  The dog, being a dog, attempted to escape from the shoes by persistently stepping out of them, as the woman worked to keep everything in order, guiding the paws back into place.  I knew if I was patient, I would capture a funny moment.

Photography is a medium through which the world can be both documented and reimagined. By freezing action, the camera allows time to momentarily stand still, where the familiar can be combined, layered and transformed into something unexpected.

 Through this spatial play, I integrate reflections of advertisements with the urban architecture of NYC. Blending these elements into one, reveals the hidden relationships that we encounter daily and often overlook. I hope this image encourages viewers to slow down, reconsider their surroundings, and experience the world from a different perspective.

When one wants to investigate the life around us, I think it is necessary to find a way to document the invisible, the essential. For me, it is necessary to observe daily life from the individuality within the collective, observing each character in a minute and instantaneous way and abstracting it from the crowd. This photograph is part of a series where the characters are in scenes full of people, and I extract small individual scenes that convey stillness. It is a stolen photograph and made with a fixed focal length of 40 mm.

Seville is the city where I was born. It is in the south of Spain and at any time of the year the sun radiates in a very special way, making the colors magical.

The scene reminded me of a movie by my admired Wes Anderson. I crossed the road and ran towards her, I only had one shot.

I was walking in the park, on a bridge, and as I looked down I noticed the scene. It seemed like the little baby was trying to escape an almost exhausted grandmother. But the true story is different... The baby's parents were under the bridge, watching him. I only noticed that afterwards. The lady on the grass was enjoying a sunny day in the park, laying on the grass. And that's the beauty behind unknown stories in photography.

A lonely man walks on a bridge in a park in Bucharest. I like exploring the idea of urban loneliness. The idea of solitude and isolation is central to the culture of the city. Loneliness is a subjective state and not necessarily about being alone. It can run deep in the fabric of a person or it can be transient – a reaction to different external circumstances that sooner or later dissipates. Someone can be lonely in a crowd, if they feel disconnection. It’s not enough just to live in close proximity to others.
